Blade Care

So let’s talk blade care. The knives that I make are typically of a High Carbon Steel which behaves differently than your standard stainless store bought knives. That being said lets get into how to take care of high carbon knives.

  • Always keep it oiled with some form of oil Remington Gun oil, WD-40, Canola oil, 3n1 oil

  • Try to keep fingerprints off the blade. The acid in the fingerprints can cause the blade to rust.

  • When cutting anything acidic you should clean the blade off as soon as you are thru. Whether it be vegetables, fruits, or meat just about everything food based is acidic and will tarnish the blade. You can slow the tarnishing process down by making sure to hand wash the blade with a little soap and water then lightly oiling it soon as you are thru using it.

  • Never Ever put any knife in the dishwasher!!!!!!! It will ruin the knife. Don’t even let it “soak” in the bottom of the sink. Hand wash only pat it dry then apply oil.

  • Do not leave it in the car!!! During the summer temperatures inside the car can get hot enough for the epoxy to soften up on the handle causing it to fail and during the winter it can get cold enough the metal and handle will try to shrink causing the handle to crack

  • Do Not Ever use a draw thru sharpener those things are horrible for your knife! All the should have to be done on my blades is a light stropping on a leather belt or diamond rod. If some how the edge is rolled to the point it needs to be on a stone or sander please contact me I will do that at no charge.

  • If you are going to be storing it for a long period of time or live in a area with high moister then it needs to be removed from the sheath while being stored. The leather can collect moisture and will cause the blade to rust.
